    About

    Personal Statement

I am a researcher and teacher of Film Studies with a special interest in French Cinema. I have published books on Agnès Varda (1998) and Jacques Rivette (with Douglas Morrey, 2009). Recently my research has centred on multlingual exchanges in European cinema and on the film-related thought of the philosopher of the visual Georges Didi-Huberman. I have supervised PhD's on recent European 'cinema of cruelty' (Von Trier, Haneke, Claire Denis et al. - 2015) and am currently co-supervising a thesis on Italian police thrillers of the 70s. I would be interested in PhD proposals covering any aspect of French cinema, particularly the legacy of the Nouvelle Vague and associated ripples, and in projects concerned with cinematic representations of multilingualism in Europe.
