Windows defender anti-spyware
Microsoft Defender Anti-Spyware is the spyware search and removal tool installed on the Managed Windows Service. The program's icon resembles a small castle and can be found in the short cut toolbar in the bottom right hand corner of your computer, by the clock.
Windows Defender is software that helps protect your computer against pop-ups, slow performance and security threats caused by spyware and other unwanted software by detecting and removing known spyware from your computer.
What does defender do?
Spyware detection and removal
- Windows Defender quickly and easily finds spyware and other unwanted programs that can slow down your computer, display annoying pop-up ads, change Internet settings, or use your private information without your consent.
- Windows Defender eliminates detected spyware easily at your direction, and if you inadvertently remove programs that you actually want, it's easy to get them back
Improved Internet browsing safety
- Windows Defender helps stop spyware before it infiltrates your computer. Windows Defender also offers a continuous safeguard designed to target all the ways that spyware can infiltrate your computer.
- Windows Defender works without distracting you. It runs in the background and automatically handles spyware based on preferences that you set. You can use your computer with minimal interruption.
You may notice an orange exclamation mark on the icon this is nothing to worry about. It is due to the fact that we at the University monitor and install the updates via one of our servers rather than letting Microsoft install them direct to the University computers.
Using defender interface
If you want to check that your definitions are up to date you can right click on the icon and select open. If you then click on the History option it will display your latest update information.
You can customise which drives Defender scans by clicking on the down arrow next to scan and selecting custom scan and then clicking on select next to the “scan selected drives and folders”
And then you can tick which drives you wish to scan.
If Defender detects any spyware it will be sent to Quarantine so that it will not affect your computer. Once in quarantine you can choose whether to restore or remove. In the majority of cases you will highlight the item in quarantine, and then remove it.
Two items which are normally picked up are; pskill and psshutdown, you can allow these as they are University programs.
