Update for Windows 10 Managed Windows Service (MWS) staff computers

08 March 2021

Computing Services is working to ensure that all staff remain in a supported and secure environment with the latest version of Windows 10.

Staff who use a University Managed Windows Service (MWS) laptop or desktop computer need to update to the latest version of Windows 10 - the October 2020 (20H2) update.

If your computer is running an earlier version of Windows 10, please update to the October 2020 version as soon as possible. By upgrading now, you can do so at your own convenience prior to a forced upgrade being pushed out by Computing Services.

The update includes the new version of Edge. The new Edge web browser has been completely re-built, based on the same underlying technology as Google Chrome, but has the benefit of enhanced integration with Microsoft 365 services. By default, Edge will sign-in to Microsoft's service automatically, and the new tab page will show content from your Microsoft 365 apps, SharePoint and OneDrive.

To update your MWS computer:

1. Check which version of Windows 10 the PC is currently running: simply type 'about your PC' in the search on your toolbar. The version will be displayed under the heading Windows specification. If the version number begins with a number that is below 20, you need to upgrade your computer.

2. To update to the latest version, follow the instructions in the knowledge article available at the link below. If the computer is off-campus, you will need to connect to the VPN to update it. To help those doing the update over home broadband, we also recommend that you download the update file in advance of performing the update. Detailed, step-by-step instructions are available in our knowledge article: https://liverpool.service-now.com/sp/?id=kb_article_view&sysparm_article=KB0012227
