CSD rolls out new security software as part of Cyber Essentials compliance

09 November 2018

The University's Computing Services Department (CSD) will be rolling out a new piece of security software to all staff PCs on the Managed Windows Service (MWS) as part of its plan to gain Cyber Essentials certification.

As mentioned previously, Cyber Essentials is a cross-sector, industry standard mechanism for institutions to demonstrate best practice in information security. Gaining this certification also allows us to remain a research-led institution by submitting research bids with the appropriate compliance.

* What is this new software?
The new software is called Admin Rights Manager. It will change the way in which staff access administrator rights on their devices. Admin Rights Manager automatically creates an environment where administrator rights are something you access temporarily, and use for the tasks that require administrator rights.
Administrator rights are required to download, install, update and licence software (that isn't available on Install University Applications), and change system settings. All staff members who currently have administrator rights will still be able to access administrative rights temporarily, whenever they may need them.

* Where can I download it from?
There is no need to download this software. Admin Rights Manager will be loaded onto machines automatically. This process will begin on Monday 12 November 2018 and will be gradually rolled out to all MWS PCs over a two-week period. A reboot of your PC will be required once your PC has been updated, but you will be notified via pop-up messages of what you need to do. If at any point you are unsure of any changes, give the Service Desk a call on extension number 44567.

* Why are we making these changes?
This is a change to how staff currently work on their machines. However, it is designed to keep staff and their information safe from online threats and enable researchers to continue to submit research bids with the appropriate compliance.
