Final reminder: Retirement of VOCAL and move to SharePoint Online

05 December 2017

This is a final reminder that the University's collaborative working environment, known as VOCAL, is moving to SharePoint Online.

Files, folders and data currently held on VOCAL sites will need to be migrated to a new SharePoint site. We advise staff to move all sites by the end of the year before VOCAL is switched off on the 8th January 2018.

It is the responsibility of VOCAL Site Collection Administrators to manage this process, and we would recommend planning this as soon as possible.

Full support is available from the Service Desk and you can find advice and guidance on migrating your site in the self-service portal at:

Site Collection Administrators should take the opportunity to review the content they manage in VOCAL and delete any sites that are no longer required. Files and folders should be rationalised and we strongly recommend considering the structure of your site before transferring your content to SharePoint.

Once this has been done a new SharePoint site should be requested by the Site Collection Administrator via the self-service portal at:

Site Collection Administrators are also responsible for migrating content from their VOCAL site to a new SharePoint site. The principles of managing a SharePoint site are largely the same as VOCAL.

No new VOCAL sites can be created, all new sites must be in SharePoint.

*Benefits of SharePoint Online*

SharePoint Online is a user friendly, secure, system that is part of Microsoft Office 365. It is fully integrated with other Microsoft Office software and will make collaborative working with internal and external colleagues simple and more efficient. Find out about SharePoint on the CSD website:

SharePoint resources and tutorials can be found on the Microsoft website: and courses to help staff make the most of SharePoint will be available in the new year.
