Credits: 15

Semester: Semester 1

This module is offered in the MA in Translation to students with Arabic, French, German, Italian or Spanish; it is co-taught in part with CHIN513 and MODL533.

In this module, students will gain advanced interpreting skills in liaison interpreting, sight translation and consecutive interpreting, including public service interpreting, across a range of interactional settings, e.g. health, education, tourism, politics, law and business. Authentic and realistic audiovisual materials will be used in the teaching, which is informed by professional practice. Throughout the module, students will learn about the main theories in interpreting studies and the ethics, professionalism and career development relating to the interpreting industry and market. They will also reflect on their interpreting practice, justify their decisions, and provide and receive peer feedback by drawing on some of the concepts and theories they have learned from MODL511.

Students wishing to work with two languages can take the 30-credit module MODL533, which allows them to be assessed separately in each language.

Students taking CHIN513, MODL523 and MODL533 can audit SOCI339 ‘Drugs, Crime and Society’ in Semester 1.
