Therapeutic Radiography and Oncology BSc (Hons) allows students the traditional academic and clinical learning opportunities to develop into competent and resilient radiographers, equipped with the necessary skills to flourish in a wide array of professional environments.
This course adopts an integrated, case-based approach, linking academic study, simulation and clinical placements to explore the full radiotherapy patient pathway. It aims to produce competent, reflective, research-active, caring, safe, proactive and progressive Therapeutic Radiographers, through an innovative and authentic teaching and assessment strategy encompassing real-world radiotherapy research and radiotherapy clinical simulation.
The programme has been designed using a case-based approach; this means that a cancer patient case will bring to life the radiotherapy patient journey and provide a framework to connect the content delivered. The programme content is organised into four key themes:
You will study a range of profession-specific modules, engage in interprofessional learning through activities with fellow students in the School of Allied Health Professions and Nursing and attend clinical placement during academic terms. Clinical placement weeks increase progressively from year one to year three. Placements are undertaken in a variety of Radiotherapy Cancer Centres, and incorporate an opportunity to complete an elective period with an alternative radiotherapy provider.

Year two of the programme expands the previously acquired knowledge with an increasing emphasis on the understanding and application of principles to clinical practice. You are encouraged to develop the skills of interpretation and evaluation and to relate them to all areas of the programme.

Year three of the programme enables you to develop critical analysis of the impact of innovation and technological advances on practice, alongside consideration of complex radiotherapy management pathways. The greater part of this year is spent in the clinical environment, allowing you to consolidate and develop skills. This will enable you to become clinically competent and safe to practice.

The programme employs a diverse range of teaching and learning strategies designed to promote active engagement, practical skill development, and the progression of students as autonomous, lifelong learners. These approaches are inclusive, supporting a variety of learning styles and preferences.
Key methods include case-based learning, interactive lectures, practical and clinical skills group work, simulation activities, and directed study. In addition, students participate in role play, problem-based learning, small group work, student-led seminars, collaborative project work, and interactive tutorials. Practical work using our radiotherapy simulation suite, imaging suite, digital equipment, Clinical Skills Resource Room, and the Human Anatomy Resource Centre complements teaching activities. Collectively, these approaches promote critical thinking, teamwork, and the application of theory to real-world practice.
Face-to-face interaction among all students takes place through shared lectures, tutorials, and group work. In addition, online interaction is actively encouraged and facilitated. Opportunities for inter-professional education and collaborative learning are also integrated, enabling students to engage with peers across a range of healthcare profession programmes.
A range of assessment methods is employed across the programme, incorporating both coursework and examinations to provide a balanced evaluation of student achievement. These methods include unseen written and computer-based examinations, essay assignments with defined word limits, multiple-choice questions, case study presentations and interactive practical examinations.
Assessment of the work-based learning component is a key aspect of the programme. You will be required to communicate your knowledge and views effectively in both oral and written form; analyse, implement and evaluate your practice; and contribute to the research and evidence base of your chosen profession.
The variety of assessment approaches has been carefully selected to ensure a comprehensive and balanced evaluation, enabling undergraduate students to demonstrate their intellectual abilities, practical competencies, and professional skills across all areas of the programme.

4 scholarships are available each year to support undergraduate applicants from socio-economically under-represented backgrounds who permanently reside in the Liverpool City Region. Successful applicants will receive a stipend of £5,000 per year for 3 years. Applications open in August 2026.
This scholarship will support undergraduate students from widening participation backgrounds in the Department of Languages, Cultures and Film with their year abroad.
This award offers £3,000 per year for a UK undergraduate student from an under-represented background who has successfully completed the Liverpool Scholars or Pathways to Medicine programme.
If you’re a UK student joining an undergraduate degree and have a household income below £35,000, you could be eligible for a Liverpool Bursary worth up to £2,000 for each year of undergraduate study.

| Profession-specific knowledge and skills required | The UCAS Personal Statement, must demonstrate an understanding of the Therapeutic Radiography & Oncology role. Applicants should have an appreciation of the demands of the programme and a realistic understanding of what is required when on clinical placement. Having experience of working with the general public, children, the elderly or people with disabilities, in a paid or voluntary capacity will strengthen an application. |
