This module is designed for students considering a career in the academy or related sectors. It will help students understand the driving forces which motivate different actors in modern universities, appreciate the way money flows through the higher education sector, and how this incentivises different kinds of academic activity. Practical skill development will focus on three academic areas, central to academic practice 1) journal articles, 2) grant proposals, 3) oral presentations, each are summatively assessed. There will be a particular emphasis on good practice and issues such as the importance of robust study design, open science, and replicability. This module has been shaped by the UK Reproducibility Network and University Policy on Open Science.
