Code: POLI556

Credits: 15

Semester: Semester 2

Managing in crises is an essential part of public life in the contemporary world and yet is an under-researched theme in the study of institutions, governance, administration and public policy. This module explores the impact of crisis on the ability of actors to manage as normal in particular contexts. The module looks at themes such as institutions, democracy and crisis, democracy and non-democracy crises, the expectations of management in public life and leadership styles and approaches. The module analyses several types of crisis – economic (the impact of the sub-prime housing crash of 2008), political (the outcome of the 2016 Brexit referendum in the UK, institutional conflict such as the US Supreme Court vs federal government) global pandemics (Covid19) disasters (the Fukushima incident, an incoming tropical storm) and the threat of terrorism.
