ILCMS Research Project

Code: LCMS701

Credits: 60

Semester: Summer

This module offers an opportunity for students to spend time exploring and researching an area that they find interesting and is relevant in their field of study. Students will choose a project from a list of those offered by the supervisors. They will work independently but with guidance from an expert in the field. A variety of projects will be offered and can include primarily data analysis of existing data e.g., biobank data, systematic review or may involve an element of data collection such laboratory work, questionnaires, and bioinformatics . Students will learn various aspects of research project planning such as time management i.e., identifying key goals and objectives, team working, and governance i.e., health and safety, data management and ethics. They will submit a project plan, and then communicate their findings in a video presentation and a final report. Initially the time commitment will be on average around 0.5 to 1 days a week for project work, building up to around 2 days a week as the project progresses. Time will also be spent attending seminars, meetings and preparing assessments. The exact timings and distribution of the commitment will vary, depending on the type of project and the EDI needs of the student.
