Health economics concerns the allocation of scarce health and care resources. In this module students will be introduced to the economic arguments for and against public and private models of healthcare provision, approaches to determine how to distribute healthcare resources fairly, and how to determine whether an intervention is a cost-effective use of healthcare resources (‘value for money’). Particular attention is given to the application of these concepts to public health.
The aim is to equip students with the skills to critique and apply core concepts of health economics by enhancing knowledge of how health economics can inform efficient and equitable use of health (and care) resources.
Students will benefit from research-connected teaching with academic staff and have opportunities for active learning. Learning will be assessed via two pieces of coursework.
