This module offers a hands-on, engaging experience in research planning, communication, and development, equipping students with the essential skills to succeed in both their research projects and future careers. Students will collaborate with their supervisory team to design and plan their research, while also identifying key training needs for successfully completing their research project.
Throughout the module, students will gain exposure to research question and experimental design, funding, ethics, governance, sustainability and project management. Additionally, they will develop communication strategies to engage different audiences, from academic peers to the general public, with a focus on the importance of public participation in research.
A unique feature of this module is the opportunity to participate in a research sandpit, a collaborative, interactive environment where students develop and pitch research proposals to simulated funders. Students will also develop a public engagement activity, providing practical experience in translating complex scientific ideas to non-expert audiences.
Assessments will include a written scoping review, project and training plan, a self-reflection of the group grant proposal pitch and oral presentation of the public engagement activity.
By becoming embedded in active research groups and joining the vibrant Microbiome Innovation Centre community, students will expand their professional networks, collaborating with academics, industry professionals, and fellow students. This experience will significantly enhance their confidence, research capabilities, and employability. This module is ideal for students who want to undertake PhD training in academia and/or to develop skills which are sought after in industry, public sector agencies and non-governmental organisations/charities.
