Overview

The Liverpool Law School invites applications for a Graduate Teaching Fellowship (GTF), in collaboration with the European Criminal Law Academic Network (ECLAN), commencing October 2026. The thesis will be supervised by Professor Valsamis Mitsilegas, Dean of the School of Law and Social Justice and ECLAN Co-Coordinator.
The successful candidate will join the Law School’s vibrant PGR community, with exciting plans to complete a doctoral research degree. They will contribute to the activities of ECLAN and will additionally deliver undergraduate teaching in the Law School.

About this opportunity

We welcome research proposals falling within the area of European Criminal Law broadly defined. The field includes proposals on the intersections between European Criminal Law and other areas of law, including transnational criminal law, migration law, data protection law, law and technology/AI, and business and economic law. Proposals focusing on the constitutional and human rights dimensions of European criminal law would also be welcome.

Graduate Teaching Fellows will be based in our state-of-the-art building in the centre of campus and benefit from the Law School’s teaching, research and careers training, along with further training and professional development provided by the University’s Postgraduate Researcher Experience Team.

Who is this for?

Candidates should have completed (or be near to completing) a postgraduate degree in Law at Masters or an equivalent level. Exceptionally, applications will be considered from applicants who have an excellent first degree in Law or related subject and relevant postgraduate experience (e.g. in practice). Successful applicants will be required to undertake small-group teaching and assessment marking in one or more foundation subjects of English Law (Criminal Law, Contract Law, Tort Law, Public Law, Land Law, Equity and Trusts, EU Law). Previous teaching experience is not required.

Open to international students but only funded at home fee rate.

Funding your PhD

The Graduate Teaching Fellows will be funded over a three-year period (dependent on successful progression) of full-time PhD registration, during which the post-holder will teach for the Law School. Over this period, the Law School will pay University fees at the Full-Time UK student rate (currently £5,238), plus a full maintenance grant per annum fixed at the UKRI level (£21,805 in 2026-27). The three years of full-time PhD registration will be followed by an unfunded writing-up period of up to one year. International students are welcome to apply for the GTF posts. However, to comply with UK Immigration regulations there may be a visa requirement. Full-time PhD registration will commence from October 2026.
