This module introduces students to the study of capitalism in the early 21st century, and the increasing fragility of liberalism. By the 1990s some people had claimed that liberal power had become ubiquitous and even eternal – that the history of contestations between capitalism and its communist and socialist alternatives had come to an end with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the demise of communism. Politics was going to thus be more simple, more uniform and function according to the needs of the economy. However now this era of stability is well and truly over. This course examines the political and economic forces have led us to the current rupture, and raises debates about what the political and economic future might, and should look like.
