This second-year module develops your understanding of Latin literature through focussed study of an author and their works within their social, cultural and historical contexts. In addition to learning about life of a major Roman author and the world they lived in, you will study a number of set texts in detail and develop your understanding of issues which may include (but which are not limited to) genre, authorship, patronage, relationships between literature, politics, and philosophy, and wider literary and cultural traditions. Alongside this literary and cultural survey, this module will also support you to enhance essential skills for studying the ancient world. You will develop your skills in analysing different primary sources (including literature), evaluating modern scholarship, and academic writing. By the end of the module, you will be well-prepared for more advanced study of the literature and culture of the Roman world in Year 3.
