We build on year 1 knowledge as we further develop core knowledge in physical, organic, inorganic, analytical and sustainable chemistry. Students learn to use the laws of thermodynamics and fundamental statistical thermodynamics to derive thermodynamic relationships and analyse practical problems ranging from gas phase to electrochemistry. Students further develop their organic synthesis knowledge through two-step synthetic design. The inorganic focus is on molecular symmetry and transition metal chemistry. The analytical strand introduces students to the theory of mass spectrometry and NMR. Sustainability outlines the important of sustainable development and the use of green chemistry metrics. Support if offered through formative workshops run by academic staff to help practice and apply the core concepts. Assessment is through exam, sustainability problem sets and group analytical activity
