As we move into year 3, we continue the further expansion of core chemistry knowledge across organic, inorganic and physical chemistry. In physical chemistry, students delve into electrochemistry and surface chemistry as the boundary of many interdisciplinary concepts. Knowledge in quantum mechanics is expanded to support the Inorganic chemistry strand, which looks at the electronic and magnetic properties of solid-state materials. For organic chemistry, there is an expansion of retrosynthetic design to multistep processes, bringing in new concepts of radical chemistry, palladium catalysed reactions and phosphorus and sulfur chemistry. Support if offered through formative workshops run by academic staff to help practice and apply the core concepts. Assessment is through exam, and group/individual work looking at student generated questions.
