This module is a core component in Year 2 of the BSc Anatomy and Human Biology. It is a practical module which includes access to cadaveric dissection in the Human Anatomy Resource Centre (HARC).
Over the course of a full semester, learners conduct a thorough and systematic exploration of the gross and functional anatomy of the thorax, exploring typical and atypical anatomy, microanatomy, thoracic imaging, clinical anatomy and the developmental basis of congenital defects. A typical week will see students’ study from a variety of online material before gathering for an interactive, activity-based seminar. Following this, learning moves into the laboratory in HARC for a deeper, hands-on experience, as students, working in a team, will carefully undertake human dissection of the thoracic region. This cadaveric dissection and examination are supplemented with models and applied anatomy, such as medical imaging. Working collaboratively, learners begin to develop the skills required to be proficient in human dissection in preparation for the more advanced modules in year 3.
Learners are assessed through a mixture of written and practical assessments.
