Professor Ronan McGrath
Professor Ronan McGrath graduated from Trinity College Dublin with a BA (Moderatorship) in Theoretical Physics in 1983 and a PhD in 1988. Following a period as a post-doctoral member of the technical staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey, he joined the University as a lecturer in 1990 and was promoted to a personal chair in 2004. He was Head of Department of Physics from 2008-2011 and became Head of the School of Physical Sciences in 2012. His research interests are in the surfaces of complex materials, and in particular he has pioneered research on the surfaces of quasicrystals, which are intermetallic alloys with very unusual structures. He is currently Secretary-General of the European Integrated Centre for the Development of New Metallic Alloys and Compounds, which is a consortium of 25 laboratories in thirteen countries.
