Stage 1

Stage 1 is for absolute beginners or for participants with a very limited knowledge of the language. At the end of this 20 week course, participants will be able to carry out relevant tasks such as introducing themselves and others and asking and answering questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know and things they have. By the end of the course students will be able to interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help. They will have a basic understanding of significant aspects of life and culture of the country and intercultural skills necessary for their language proficiency level. All Stage 1 courses are worth 15 credits. The fees for Stage 1 are £241/£204/£121.

Stage 2

Stage 2 is for those with some knowledge of the language, up to the level reached at Stage 1. At the end of this 20 week course, participants will be able to communicate routine tasks and short social exchanges, such as making invitations, giving directions, talking about daily activities or describing people and places. Students will be able to understand simple sentences and will develop a better understanding of the relevant culture and society, and some frequently used expressions related to areas of importance. All Stage 2 courses are worth 15 credits. The fees for Stage 2 are £241/£204/£121.

Stage 2+

Stage 2+ is for those who have either completed Stage 2, or who can use the language at an appropriate proficiency level. Over 20 weeks students will learn to communicate confidently through the written and spoken word about a range of topics. Themes will be introduced through authentic texts in the target language, such as newspaper articles, news items, blogs and songs. On successful completion students will be able to understand simple texts taken from popular culture and media, to discuss them and to express an opinion. They will have developed an awareness of the relevant issues and discussions in contemporary societies of native speakers, for example relating to work, travel or daily life in the country.  All Stage 2+ courses are worth 15 credits. The fees for Stage 2+ are £241/£204/£121.

Stage 3

Stage 3 is for those who have either completed Stage 2+ or who can use the language at an appropriate proficiency level. After 20 weeks students will be able to communicate effectively in a wide range of situations and to comprehend written and spoken material without the need for repetition or a dictionary. Students will be able to follow discussions on familiar matters in the standard language as they may encounter them in work, school, leisure etc. They can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans. The students will be aware of many cultural differences and know how to behave and communicate appropriately. All Stage 3 courses (except Mandarin) are worth 15 credits. Stage 4

Stage 4 is for those who have completed Stage 3, who have learned the language up to a rusty A level or who otherwise have learned the language to a comparable level. Students on this course should previously have covered the principle categories of grammar and be able to communicate effectively in fairly demanding situations. On successful completion of Stage 4 they will be able to understand extended speech and written text with complex lines of argument and carry out a wide variety of tasks in the language, such as giving presentations and contributing to in-depth discussions on topical issues. By the end of this course students should be able to behave and communicate appropriately in the target language culture, considering cultural differences.  All Stage 4 courses (except Mandarin) are worth 15 credits. Ce cours permet de découvrir la société et la culture françaises contemporaines et en particulier comment la France fait face aux défis du monde d’aujourd'hui (sa place dans l’Europe, sa résistance à la mondialisation..). Le cours se consacrera à l'étude de différents thèmes d’actualité, il s’appuiera sur une variété de documents (textes journalistiques et littéraires, films et reportages) et il sera l’occasion de pratiquer tous les aspects de la langue. Il s’adresse à des étudiants ayant acquis le niveau Stage 4 ou CEFR B1 ou ayant déjà vécu dans un pays francophone. Il est nécessaire de pouvoir s’exprimer en français.
