Egyptian Hieroglyphs for Absolute Beginners

Overview

This absolute beginners' course requires no prior knowledge of hieroglyphs

You will learn the classical stage of the language (Middle Egyptian), and focus on a particularly common type of inscription that can be found in museum collections across the world.

By the end of this course, you will be ready to take the next step in reading Hieroglyphs with us!

Week 1: The History of the Ancient Egyptian language, and Introduction to the Signs.

Week 2: The Offering Formula.

Week 3: Names, Titles and Adjectives.

Week 4: Coffins.

Week 5: Stelae.

Week 6: Reading Practice.

Please note that the ‘last date available to book’ date is only a guide. We reserve the right to close bookings earlier if courses are over- or under-subscribed. In order to avoid disappointment, please be sure enrol as soon as possible. Registrations will not be processed until the following day if received after 3pm. 

Course Lecturer: Dr Katherine Slinger 

Dr Katherine Slinger was awarded her PhD in Egyptology from the University of Liverpool in 2020 in Egyptology for her research into the non-royal Theban Necropolis. She graduated with a first-class degree in Egyptology in 2014, and a Master's degree with Distinction in Egyptology in 2015, both from the University of Liverpool. She is also a qualified primary school teacher. 

Katherine teaches a number of Egyptology language classes in the Continuing Education department of the University of Liverpool. She is also an independent researcher and freelance lecturer.
