Running in the Family: Remarkable Mothers and Daughters of the Long 18th Century

Overview

What do a campaigner for women’s rights and a novelist, an abolitionist and a mathematician, and an empress and a queen have in common? The answer is that they were three remarkable pairs of mothers and daughters born during the ‘long 18th Century’ and whose renown resonates until the present day. This short course will consider Mary Wollstonecraft and her daughter Mary Shelley, Anne Isabella Milbanke (better known as Lady Byron) and her daughter Ada Lovelace and the Empress Maria Theresa and her daughter Queen Marie Antoinette.

The course provides the opportunity for students to learn about the lives of three remarkable pairs of mothers and daughters who all had an impact in their varied fields during the 'long 18th century' and whose fame continues to the present day.

Anyone with an interest in the lives and influence of women in the 'long 18th century' and why they continue to be relevant today.

Syllabus

  • Week 1: Mary Wollstonecraft and her daughter Mary Shelley; campaigner for women’s rights and a novelist.
  • Week 2: Anne Isabella Milbanke (better known as Lady Byron) and her daughter Ada Lovelace; an abolitionist and a mathematician
  • Week 3: Empress Maria Theresa and her daughter Queen Marie Antoinette; an empress and a queen

Course lecturer

In addition to a long association with Continuing Education at the University of Liverpool, Dr Gina Muskett was formerly a lecturer in Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology at the university, where she taught courses in the art and archaeology of the Prehistoric Aegean and Ancient Greece. Gina is an Honorary Research Fellow in the department of History, where her focus is on the collection of antiquities as part of the 18th century ‘Grand Tour’. While in this role, in 2018 Gina was a winner of a Learning and Teaching Team Award. She was formerly Curator of Classical Antiquities at National Museums Liverpool, where, as an Honorary Research Associate, she continues to research the classical collections.
Gina is the author of several academic publications as well as writing for a more general market in both the UK and overseas.
