Reading Jeremiah 33-52

Overview

The final chapters of the book of Jeremiah provide details of the life of the prophet during the last days of the Kingdom of Judah before its destruction by the Babylonians under Nebuchadnezzar. Jeremiah suffers imprisonment, witnesses the destruction of Jerusalem and ends his days as a reluctant refugee in Egypt. The chapters also include a section known as the “Oracles against Foreign Nations” which are typical of the books of the Major Prophets. The course will examine two chapters per week in English but with reference to the original Hebrew text and the translation in Greek known as the Septuagint. It will contrast the opinions of several modern commentators, and seek to find a way to interpret this portion of the Hebrew Bible.

This course is for anyone with an interest in biblical studies and ancient history.

Course lecturer

Michael Tunnicliffe studied Theology at Birmingham (B.A & M.A) and at Cambridge (M.Litt) and holds a diploma in Judaism and Jewish Christian Relations from Birmingham and a Certificate in Egyptology from Manchester. He is a long established tutor for Continuing Education and teaches courses in the areas of History and Theology both online and face to face.
