Personal Statement

Matt received his PhD from Lancaster University in 2020 and has previously worked at both Lancaster University and Hugh Baird University centre. Matt's research centres around the study of "childhood films", British cinema, identity, cultural memory and Empire. A monograph based on his doctoral thesis "The Child in British Cinema" will be published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2022 as will three forthcoming book chapters, Reanimating the past: Post-Apocalypse and the First Nation Child in Cargo in Children of the Post-apocalypse: Children and Childhood in Post-apocalyptic cinema and television (Lexington Books), The Phantom of Childhood: Trauma, Transience, and Repression in the Terence Davies Trilogy in The Undead Child: Representations of Childhoods Past, Present, and Preserved (Lexington Books) and Alma Taylor, Mary Pickford, and Girlhood in Early British and Hollywood Cinema in The Oxford Handbook of Children's Film (OUP).
