Reference Number: EP/H000925/1

Start date: 1/10/2009

End date: 31/3/2015

The Programme Grant (PG), Chemical Synthesis of Transformative Extended Materials, is a collaboration between the University of Liverpool (UoL) and University College London (UCL) that is developing new capability in the chemical synthesis of functional materials. The project involves organic, inorganic, and hybrid nanomaterials synthesis, coupled with characterisation and the computational understanding of the resulting structures and properties.

Symposium on Porous Molecules

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Liverpool hosted a Symposium on Porous Molecules on 3rd June 2014. Click here for further details

Porous Materials

Barrer identified molecular porous solids as a distinct family of porous materials in the 1970s (Barrer J. Chem. Soc., Chem. Commun. 1976, 9, 333). However, crystalline solids such as Dianin’s compound and calixarenes have been associated with marginal surface areas (0–350 m2/g) and unpredictable molecular packing, which has limited their utility. We developed a family of porous organic cagemolecules with much larger surface areas (>600 m2/g; Nature Mater. 2009, 8, 973; >1,300 m2/g, Nature 2011, 474, 367).

Because the porosity is a property of the molecule itself, we can use solution processability to create hybrid materials and composites that cannot readily be formed with more traditional insoluble framework materials. (ACIE 2013, 52, 1253).

The 6:1 sorption selectivity for p-xylene over m-xylene in a metal-organic framework (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2014, 10.1002/anie.201307656; UK patent appl. 1215693) is part of a broader study of molecular separations that includes dynamical restructuring around guests (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2012, 134, 20466) and separation of mesitylene from its isomers (Nat. Chem. 2013, 5, 276). Our work on flexible metal-organic frameworks in molecular separations was the subject of a Nature News and Views article.

We have also produced the first solution processable conjugated microporous polymers (UK patent appl. No. 1219783.6; ACIE 2012, 51, 12727). This opens up new technological possibilities for this growing class of porous material.

Solid State Conductors

We have produced new approaches to mixed ionic and electronic conductors for use as solid oxide fuel cell cathodes. The modular structure of complex oxides can enhance oxide anion mobility by structural and chemical bonding mismatch at the interface between the blocks. This destabilisation of the equilibrium geometry of the solid facilitates bond-breaking processes associated with ionic migration. This internal activation strain thus lowers the barrier to anion motion. (Chem. Mater., 2013, 25, 3441–3457).

Magnetoelectric Properties

Multiferroic and magnetoelectric materials that can combine electrical writing and magnetic reading in four-state and low-power memories are important for next-generation information storage. We have combined polarity and ferromagnetism above room temperature in ScFeO3. (Journal of the American Chemical Society 2012, 134, 3737-3747)

The local-structure of the lead-free polar material Bi(Ti3/8Mg3/8Fe¼)O3 has been revealed by pair distribution function analysis, which shows that the local structure is monoclinic rather than rhombohedral. (Journal of the American Chemical Society 2012, 134, 5836-5849)

The porphyrin group is responsible for solar absorption in photosynthesis. We have made a hybrid open framework material where porphyrins are separated by metal hydroxide chains. This material generates hydrogen from water sacrificially under visible-light illumination. (Angew. Chem., Int. Ed., 2012, 7440-7444)
