Dr Gita Sedghi awarded prestigious National Teaching Fellowship

Senior Lecturer Dr Gita Sedghi from the Department of Chemistry has been awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by Advance HE.
The National Teaching Fellowship (NTF) Scheme celebrates and recognises individuals who have made an outstanding impact on student outcomes and the teaching profession in higher education.
Gita has been recognised for excellence in learning and teaching and the outstanding contribution she has made at the University of Liverpool and beyond. Her work has led to a positive shift in the experience of thousands of students within the Faculty of Science & Engineering, with the impact of her innovations also enhancing the education received by students across the University and in other institutions.
Individual excellence
Gita’s personal excellence is demonstrated most directly by her groundbreaking work including the introduction of a range of innovative developments within the teaching of chemistry. Her innovative practice in various technology-enhanced learning initiatives including the Maths online assessments and pre-lab activities have had a significant impact on students’ experience and academic performance.
Gita has been pro-active in ensuring her ideas are developed and shared more widely and she has been involved with many other universities in the UK and abroad in collaborative educational research projects as well as forging fruitful links with organisations including the Royal Society of Chemistry and Royal Statistical Society. She is actively engaged in several groups that reflect her commitment to the student experience, including the School of Physical Sciences Equality and Diversity Group; UoL staff and student well-being group and member of the editorial board of the Journal of Learning Development in Higher Education.
Gita’s practice, such as her bespoke Peer Assisted Learning Scheme and internationalisation projects have played a key role in enhancing levels of student satisfaction and employability. Her approaches have had a significant impact on pedagogical practices in other departments at UoL as well as other HE institutions including the Technological University of Dublin.
On receiving the award Gita said: “It is a great honour for my work and contribution to student experience to be recoginsed by Advance HE and I am thrilled to receive the award. I am sure that this will open doors to further enhance my practice, so that I can give students the opportunities they deserve.”
Professor Gavin Brown, Pro Vice Chancellor for Education said: “I can think of no one more deserving than Gita to receive a National Teaching Fellowship. She is an inspiration to her students and her colleagues, and has been instrumental in providing learning opportunities to students that have deepened their knowledge, enhanced their skills and broadened their horizons. I am delighted to see her commitment and enthusiasm recognised by her peers.”
Professor Liz Sheffield, Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Science and Engineering said: “I am absolutely delighted that Gita’s inspirational reach has finally been recognised at National level.”
Gita is one of only fifty-four colleagues to be recognised this year for this prestigious award. The University of Liverpool has a very strong track record of Individual National Teaching Fellowships as well as having winners of the Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence.
