Congratulations to Harriet McNicholl, a third year Chemistry with Research in Industry student, who has been named as the AstraZeneca European Synthetic Chemistry Industrial Placement Student of the Year 2021.

Harriet McNicholl recently completed her industrial placement at AstraZeneca as part of her MChem Degree. Harriet worked on process design activities towards AZD5991, an Acute Myeloid Leukaemia therapeutic.

Harriet was selected from all students based across AstraZeneca’s European sites this year. This follows on from the previous award of National Undergraduate Placement Student of the Year 2021 which she received following her presentation at a National Showcase organized by the Society of Chemical Industry.

Dr Andrew Carnell, Director of Year in Industry Courses, Department of Chemistry said: “I am delighted that Harriet has been further recognized with this prestigious Award for her work during her placement at Astra Zeneca.  To be selected from all placement students across Europe is testament to her hard work and outstanding achievement.

Harriet’s achievement will inspire other students to apply for placements and gain valuable experience.  Our Year in Industry students get a huge amount from their placements, not only in terms of practical skills and technical knowledge but increased confidence and employability.  Students return to us highly motivated for their final year and often go on to secure excellent and rewarding positions in today’s competitive job market.”
