Supporting staff to use VITAL, the University's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

What is VITAL?

VITAL is the University’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) which uses the Blackboard Learn software and is the main, centrally-supported system for learning and teaching. VITAL enables quick and easy access to course materials and provides communication tools such as discussion boards, announcements, and mobile notifications. There are also online self-assessment quizzes, tools for uploading coursework as well as support for collaborative project work. Staff and students can also access VITAL on a range of mobile devices via the Blackboard App and Blackboard Instructor App.

Other services run through VITAL include:

  • Turnitin (which helps with originality checking of student work)
  • Pebblepad (which allows students to create an online portfolio)
  • Campus Pack (which includes wiki creation tools for students)
  • Stream Capture (lecture recording and streaming software)

Where can I get support for VITAL?

Technical support

If you have a technical issue, question or problem with VITAL, please contact CSD service desk. This includes questions on enrolment, if staff or students have access problems with VITAL, or wanted to check service status or report issues with VITAL or related services, such as Turnitin.

Support for students

Students, if you have any issues with VITAL, e.g. cannot submit an assignment or cannot access materials, please contact your module leader and/or your School/Departmental student experience team who will be able to help.
