I Got Hired: Stephanie
Posted on: 21 August 2026 by Richard Finch in Class of 2025
Class of 2025 graduate Stephanie is now working as Part 1 Architectural Assistant at Rodney Melville + Partners.
What first caught your attention about this role, and what made you think, “This is for me”?
What first caught my attention about this role was the opportunity to work on projects that preserve and celebrate historic buildings, while adapting them for modern use. The role appealed to me because it combines creative design with technical problem solving and a respect for architectural history. I am enjoying researching the significance of these historic buildings and understanding traditional construction methods. I have been able to watch and help my team find sensitive design solutions that meet modern needs without compromising the buildings character. It’s been incredibly interesting to help preserve the built environment while continuing to develop my architectural skills.
Which experience along your journey has had the biggest impact on who you are professionally today?
The experience that has had the biggest impact on me professionally was being able to secure a role in an architecture practice after completing my degree.
Being able to apply the knowledge and skills I developed at the University of Liverpool in a real world setting was a significant milestone and confirmed that I had chosen the right career path. Working on live projects has allowed me to build on my academic learning while developing practical skills in design, and learning to collaborate with colleagues, clients and consultants. It has also given me a greater appreciation of the responsibility involved in working with buildings and the importance of thoughtful, well informed design decisions.
These experiences have helped me grow as a designer and have given me the confidence to take the next step in my career by beginning my Master's (M.Arch) this September 2026. I'm looking forward to building on my practical experience while continuing to develop my knowledge and skills as an aspiring Architect.
What’s been the toughest part of your graduate journey - and what did it teach you?
One of the toughest parts of my graduate journey was transitioning from university into professional practice. While my degree provided a strong foundation in design and theory, adapting to responsibilities and technical requirements of working on live projects was a significant learning curve!
I quickly realised the importance of asking questions and continuously developing my knowledge. Working in heritage and conservation has also taught me that every building presents unique challenges, and there is rarely a single "right" answer. This experience has strengthened my problem solving skills, attention to detail and confidence in collaborating with colleagues and clients. Most importantly, it has taught me that professional growth comes from embracing new challenges and viewing them as opportunities to learn.
If you could give future grads one piece of advice, what would it be?
Don't put too much pressure on yourself to have your entire career figured out as soon as you graduate. While it's beneficial to have an idea of what you want to do, don't feel that you need to have a whole life plan mapped out right now. Focus on building your skills, staying curious and making the most of every opportunity. Take the time to build your professional network as well.
Connecting with lecturers, classmates and industry professionals can open doors to opportunities, provide valuable advice and help you learn from your peers. The transition from university to the workplace can feel daunting, but it's where you'll gain experience and confidence. Be open to asking questions, learning from those around you, and stepping outside your comfort zone. Every project and every experience will help shape your career, so embrace the process and trust that your knowledge and confidence will grow with time.
