I Got Hired: Alicia

Posted on: 17 July 2026 by Richard Finch in Class of 2025

Class of 2025 Politics graduate Alicia is now working as Caseworker at House of Commons.

What first caught your attention about this role, and what made you think, “This is for me”?

I participated in the PPS scheme for those who study Politics/ International Relations and I was lucky enough to intern in the Parliamentary Office of the Rt Hon Bridget Phillipson MP. After this, I looked for more jobs in and around Westminster, where I saw a Caseworker role for an MP local to me. In the interview, we discussed values and I had also previously researched his values. These aligned with mine and I wanted to see if I could offer my own help with making sure these values shine through in his work locally and in Parliament. After having this discussion, I knew it was right for me.

Which experience along your journey has had the biggest impact on who you are professionally today?

My internship through the University's scheme definitely impacted me the most. In the political field, work is fairly unique so any form of work experience or internship is impactful as it really prepares you for life after university.

What’s been the toughest part of your graduate journey and what did it teach you?

The job search after university was not easy. I faced many rejections and ghosting from companies and offices. This affected my confidence for a while as I felt I would never be good enough to land a job after university as there is now an oversaturation of applicants for a single job. However, it took a while for me to realise it wasn't personal and I just had to keep trying while also using my free time to do things I enjoy as well as look for jobs which is so important. It also taught me that not every job is for you not because of your skills or talent but rather an office can just prefer somebody else's personality which is not personal to you, it just wasn't meant to be.

If you could give future grads one piece of advice, what would it be?

I would say to enjoy your spare time after university and not to feel pressured to apply to any job just because everyone else around you seems to be doing the same.
