Molly: An EQ+ Celebration Series Highly Commended Story

Molly is using student leadership to make big global issues feel more practical, collective and hopeful. As Co-President of Amnesty International Society, she has helped create a welcoming route into human-rights advocacy, including the Amnesty x Humanities Ball which brought more than 220 students together and raised £1,180. As a Young Climate Warriors Ambassador, she also works with Liverpool primary schools on climate education.

What are you trying to make possible through the work you do?

I want people to feel more connected to issues that can sometimes feel distant, overwhelming or difficult to engage with. Whether it is human rights or climate change, I think people are more likely to get involved when the space is welcoming, practical and gives them a way to contribute. I have tried to create opportunities for students to learn, talk about current issues and take action without feeling intimidated.

What has been a highlight of the year?

Helping to organise the Amnesty x Humanities Ball was a real highlight. It brought more than 220 students together and raised £1,180 for Amnesty, which showed me how student-led work can create both community and impact. I have also loved being a Young Climate Warriors Ambassador. Delivering assemblies and workshops in local primary schools has been a chance to talk about climate change, everyday sustainability and the UN Sustainable Development Goals in a way that feels positive and empowering for younger pupils.

Where are you hoping to take this next?

I am increasingly interested in human rights, migration, refugee protection, policy and research. I am funding my place at the UNICRI Summer School on Migration and Human Rights in Rome through part-time work because it feels so closely connected to the questions I want to explore. I hope it will help me deepen my knowledge, start shaping my dissertation and work out how I can build a future career that is meaningful and connected to people’s rights, dignity and safety.
