Placements, internships & work experience
We help hundreds of students get work experience to improve their employability. Your university degree will help equip you with skills for employment after you graduate; but most employers look for proven skills and place a high value on work experience and activities undertaken outside of your course. Any form of (paid or unpaid) work that you do, including experience you gain as part of your degree, is called work experience. Watch the work experience video for more of an insight into how work experience can improve your employability.
My Liverpool is dedicated to helping you make the most of your time whilst studying through extracurricular learning and life opportunities.
If you only apply for advertised opportunities, you may face a great deal of competition. Approaching companies directly may be a better route to success. Learn how to make speculative applications. If you find a genuine unpaid work experience opportunity, that is fine, but if you are classed as a worker you are entitled to be paid (with a few specific exceptions). Know your rights about pay, tax and National Insurance. For information on issues relating to diversity and equality in recruitment, please read our leaflet Equality and diversity issues.
In most cases, International students should be able to work full time during vacations and whilst on a one year placement as part of their Year in Industry course. If any issues arise regarding working visas, we would advise students to consult International Advice & Guidance for advice.
Liverpool Interns helps first and second year students obtain Easter and summer internships.
Summer internships are a great way of gaining work experience and developing your employability skills.
