The University of Heidelberg is among the top three German universities in all three relevant international rankings. The Department of Physics and Astronomy is dedicated to a broadly laid-out programme of teaching and research. It feels itself committed to Humboldt's ideal of teaching rooted in research and sees its research programme and the borders of knowledge as a prerequisite for teaching and training its students at high quality. It is home to around 2000 students, with over 400 participating in the doctoral program.

Both AVA Partners GSI and MPG have close links with the wit the University’s Department of Physics and Astronomy and there is a specialised research focus on the matter and anti-matter asymmetry in the universe.
