Study Abroad Stories

Tudor Ilie, Master of Architecture (MArch)

Host University: Hochschule Anhalt (Germany)

Why did you apply for Study Abroad and would you do it again?

Experiencing a different architecture course and a different architectural landscape was a crucial factor but I also applied to have the possibility to experience a new country (Germany) and acquaint myself with the German language and culture. I had a valuable experience, and I would apply again if I would have the opportunity.

Tell us about your favourite memory of your time away or one thing you will never forget.

My favourite memory is probably not a particular event, but the whole journey of living in Berlin, with its ups and downs, and the nostalgia after the experience was over.

What advice would you give to someone who isn’t sure about applying?

I would say that the whole experience is a unique opportunity to experiment different interests and gain a new perspective on a subject, whether architectural or of a different nature.

Tell us about the modules and teaching styles. Do you think you learnt new skills?

The teaching style varies from tutor to tutor. In my case, the teaching style was mostly based on research. We also did a trip to Holland which allowed us to study a series of buildings and themes that were of interest to us. I probably learned to be more inquisitive of architecture.

How did study abroad prepare you for your future career in Architecture?

The study abroad was a good exercise for my future architectural career, not only allowing me to pursue my interests but also pushing me to perform in a different environment and giving me the opportunity to survey the possibility of a future career in a different country.

Do you think study abroad will make you stand out when applying for jobs?

I think that the whole experience is an asset which can prove employers that I have a varied experience and that I am able to adapt to various situations.
