The premise of the project is to explore the notion of how a community can deal with flooding.

The project is based on the south coast of England, in the small town of Littlehampton. The town has a flood risk of 3a, which is a 1 in 100 chance of flooding.

From the site visit and talking to the local council, it was identified that the West Bank requires regeneration, which fits into the council’s leisure strategy.

The RIBA have proposed three solutions to counter the issue of flooding: Retreat, Defend and Attack.

This project uses the concept of ‘Embrace’ as a solution; building on to and living with the water. The masterplan changes and adapts daily, to embrace a tidal difference of 4.6m as well as accounting for a further 1m of future flooding and sea level rise.
