Dr Vasiliki Zali-Schiel

Dr Zali's research interests lie in classical Greek historiography and in particular the narrative techniques employed by Greek historians. Her first monograph, 'The Shape of Herodotean Rhetoric', offers a reassessment of Herodotus’ rhetorical awareness by examining the ways in which the speeches in the final five books of the 'Histories' emphasize the fragility of Greek unity and the problematic Greco-Persian polarity. The book has just been published with Brill's 'International Studies in the History of Rhetoric' series: http://www.brill.com/products/book/shape-herodotean-rhetoric.

Dr Zali is additionally interested in the ancient and Byzantine reception of Herodotus and is presently co-editing, together with Dr Jessica Priestley, a volume of commissioned papers on ‘Herodotus in Antiquity and Beyond’ (Brill, forthcoming 2015: http://www.brill.com/products/series/brills-companions-classical-reception). This volume will address the reception of a wide range of Herodotean themes in diverse genres from ancient to modern times. Future research plans include a detailed study of the use of speech in Xenophon's works.
