Biomechanics of Turning
Falls in the elderly cost the NHS at least £1.7 BN p/a, For hip fractures alone and falls during turning are 7.9 times more likely to cause hip fracture than those from other causes. Yet we know very little about the mechanics and control of human turning and how they can go wrong, and almost nothing about turning in real-life, community living. We are using state of the art sensor techniques to understand how the mechanics and control of turning can become unstable in everyday contexts such as busy shops.
