Become a Residential Adviser

Our Residential Advisers (RA) live amongst the students in all 7 of our Halls of Residences. The RAs role is to provide support, guidance and out of hours contact for our residents, as well as help to run our exciting social programme. For providing this service RA's receive reduced accommodation fees. The role is available for staff and students who are interested in gaining or developing key skills for future employment, and wish to have a positive impact on the community in our Halls of Residences.

The RA role is a highly rewarding position with a variety of challenges and opportunities for personal development. In becoming an RA you will have the chance to diversify your skill set in many areas including event planning; communication and leadership; and interpersonal skills.

The key duties of a Residential Adviser are:

  • To work closely with, and report to, the Hall Warden. Each of our 7 Halls has a Warden who has overall responsibility for the Hall and line manages the RAs.
  • To provide an overnight support service to students dealing with incidents in the halls. This is subject to change but typically one night a week, 8pm – 8am on weeknights and 6pm – 8am on weekends.
  • To take pastoral responsibility for a set group of students in a hall, maintaining regular contact with them, providing opportunities to meet one another and ensuring their wellbeing.
  • To plan and deliver community building events with the help of the Halls Life Team.
  • To develop their knowledge of the support available in halls and the wider University and direct students accordingly.

Living Environment

There are a range of living options available to RA’s - from shared RA flats to individual studio apartments. You can have a look at the different Halls of Residence, and room types, here. You will be given the opportunity to state your preference on your application form, however allocations will be made based on where RA support is needed most.

Recruitment Process

You will need to complete an online application you can find on the University jobs page here, simply search for ‘Residential Adviser’. If shortlisted, you will be invited to interview for a position with a panel consisting of the Hall Warden and a member of the Halls Life Team. Due to the current situation interviews will take place online from the week commencing 15th June. You will be contacted directly to be given a specific date and time. If you are successful at interview we will send further information regarding next steps. We are provisionally hoping that successful applicants who have met all of the necessary requirements outlined in the ‘RA Recruitment Process’ document below, will be able to move in to halls from September 2020.

If shorlisted, you will be invited to interview for a position to a panel consisting of the Hall Warden and a member of the Halls Life Team.

Prior to interview you will need to send a colour copy of the following: 

  • Passport cover (front and back)
  • Passport photo page
  • Any relevant right to work visa (eg. Tier 4/Student Visa)
