The University has begun installing new trio recycling bins across campus, replacing the existing general waste litter bins and helping to improve how waste is separated and managed.
Previously, waste from these bins was collected through a single general waste stream, meaning materials were not separated for recycling at the point of disposal.
Improving recycling across campus
The new bins introduce clearly defined streams for dry mixed recycling, food waste and general waste, enabling much greater levels of recycling across campus.
This will significantly improve how waste is managed, ensuring recyclable materials and food waste are properly processed rather than going to general waste. By separating waste at source, the system will also help reduce contamination and increase the amount of material that can be effectively recycled or recovered.
Food waste will be diverted to more sustainable treatment methods, such as anaerobic digestion, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and generate useful by-products, including energy and fertiliser.
Sorting waste correctly
The new trio bins include separate sections for:
Mixed recycling: clean, dry and loose items only, including plastic bottles, plastic pots, tubs and trays, paper, cardboard, metal packaging and cartons.
Food waste: no packaging or liquids, including tea bags, coffee grounds, fruit and vegetable peelings, food leftovers, eggshells and small bones.
General waste: items that cannot currently be recycled through these bins, including sweet wrappers, coffee cups, crisp packets, single-use cutlery and plates, paper towels and tissues, and polystyrene containers and packaging.

Supporting a cleaner, more consistent campus
As well as supporting the University’s sustainability goals, the new bins will create a more consistent and modern look across campus, enhancing outdoor spaces and improving the experience for students, staff and visitors.
The rollout has started this week and will continue over the next couple of weeks, with further updates and communications planned over the summer ahead of students returning to campus.
